Full-body scanners have been rolled-out at Heathrow and Manchester airports - with passengers refusing to cooperate barred from boarding their flight.
A small number of passengers using the two airports will now be asked to undergo scans using the advanced imaging technology (AIT) scanners.
The technology will be introduced at all UK airports following its unveiling at Birmingham airport later this month. Transport Secretary Lord Adonis said the scanners will help security staff detect explosives.
The move to step-up security comes after the attempted Detroit bomb attack on Christmas Day. However, civil liberties campaigners have strongly opposed the use of the technology - saying it is an invasion of privacy. Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab is accused of trying to detonate a bomb on a flight as it was about to land in the US city.
Transport Secretary Lord Adonis confirmed the move in a written parliamentary statement. He said: "In the immediate future, only a small proportion of airline passengers will be selected for scanning. If a passenger is selected for scanning and declines, they will not be permitted to fly."
